The Republic of Bulgaria is located in Southeastern Europe. This state is part of the European Union, and until 1989 was part of the Soviet Union. Now the main sectors of the economy of this country are agriculture, tourism and services. The population is more than 7 million people. The history of the republic and the basics of life of the people of this country are expressed in the state symbols, namely the flag.
This is what the flag of Bulgaria looks like:
History of the Bulgarian flag
The predecessor of the modern flag consisted of three colors, which were arranged in the following sequence: green, white, red (from top to bottom). This was at the time of the Bulgarian Legion (1861-1862). The Bulgarian Republic fought for independence for many years. Philip Totyu’s volunteer detachment, in the Serbo-Turkish War (1876-1877), used a cloth with the reverse arrangement of colors.
In the 1870s the green-white-red tricolor became the flag of the Bulgarian Revolutionary Central Committee.
As a national symbol the white, green and red tricolor was approved by the Bulgarian constitution on April 16, 1879. From 1947 to 1990, the coat of arms of the Bulgarian People’s Republic – a rampant lion in a shield – was depicted on the roof. The proportions of the cloth were 2:3. With the advent of the new constitution, the coat of arms was removed and the proportions changed to 3:5.
The prototype was the banner of the Bulgarian militia. The main leader of the revolution was George Stoykovich Rakovsky.
Description
The modern Bulgarian flag is composed of three colors: white, green and red. This national symbol is a rectangular cloth measuring 3:5, and all the colored horizontal stripes on it are equal. The flag was re-approved on November 27, 1990 (first in 1879).
From 1947 to 1990 the appearance of the coat of arms on the roof changed. The background of the shield was first red, then blue. Later the lion itself changed color: yellow, brown, white.
Flag colors
The colors of flags are never set by chance: they always carry meaning. The national symbol of Bulgaria has not changed its white-green-red tricolor since the nineteenth century. Only the sequence of colors of the stripes changed.
Meaning of colors and flag symbol
- The color white is a symbol of freedom and peace. The independence of Bulgaria has been defended for many years, so the citizens of the country consider freedom one of the main benefits for the country.
- Green – agriculture, forests and love of nature.
- Red – the blood spilled during the struggle for independence from Turkey.
The flag of the Bulgarian Navy has the same colors, but the size of the stripes on it is different. 1/3 of the width of the flag is green and red, and 2/3 is white. This suggests that independence and freedom are extremely important for Bulgaria even today. In addition, the coat of arms of the country is depicted on the roof. In other cases, it is inadmissible to depict the coat of arms on the flag (and vice versa).
For Bulgarians, the state symbols of the country are extremely important, because they carry the memory of the losses and victories of this nation. A whole list of rules prohibiting changes in the symbols of the republic has been drawn up.
